Avoiding Osteoporosis

According to an analysis published in 2004 and based on the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III), over 70 percent of women ages 51-70 and nearly 90 percent of women over 70 are not getting the recommended adequate intake of vitamin D.

Vitamin D is very important for overall bone health. Vitamin D also helps ensure that the body absorbs and retains calcium, which is critical for building strong, healthy bones. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to osteoporosis, which affects millions.

The best treatment for bone health should be personalized to your needs and should include a combination of exercise (weight training and cardio), a healthy diet, vitamin D and calcium supplements, and prescription medication if needed. Talk to your physician and work with a professional trainer to tailor your workouts.

The Core Problem

Your body's core consists of the lumbo-pelvic-hip complex, thoracic spine and cervical spine. THE CORE is your body's center of gravity. Few of us have sufficient CORE STRENGTH.

A stronger and more stable CORE will maximize your EXTREMITY STRENGTH (limbs) and POWER (how fast your muscles can exert force). You should work on strengthening your body's core before trying to make significant gains in strength elsewhere, such as your limbs.

A weak core will lead to injuries such as low back pain and a host of other trunk-related problems. Stability ball exercises, planks, bridges and low back extensions are great core exercises.

New Year's Fitness Resolution Burnout

About this time every year, many people's new year's fitness resolutions begin to lose steam. In my previous blog entry, I mentioned some pitfalls to avoid.

So, did you skip that Friday workout? If you did, work out on Saturday or Sunday and keep it going on Monday. If you can stay with your exercise plan through March, you have a great chance to continue.

Usually, you'll begin to see significant body and health improvements at about 3 months. This will propel you to continue your workouts.
